There are two main classes of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) and these are M41S and SBA. They have diverse fields of applications such as drug delivery, catalysis, separation and sorption. In their synthesis the major types of reagents used are silica precursor, structure directing agent/surfactant, catalyst and water. This mini review elaborates on the conditions which could affect particle size, sphericity, pore size and pore wall thickness of MSN in relation to molar ratios of the reagents, synthesizing conditions, use of cosurfactants and cosolvents. |
